A Western Australian distiller has won the top accolade at the 2016 Australian Distilled Spirits Awards. The awards, run by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV), recognise Australia’s best spirits producers and awarded Champion Australian Distiller to Limeburners in Albany this year.

Limeburners also won Champion Small Batch Distiller as well as Champion Whisky for its Single Malt Whisky Heavy Peat M226; a major feat for the distillery, which was the first to legally produce single malt in the state in 2005. This is also the second year in a row that Limeburners has won Champion Australian Distiller from the national awards.

Limeburners’ home, The Great Southern Distilling Company, is now one of two distilleries (also The Margaret River Distilling Company) owned and operated by Director and Distiller, Cameron Syme. Limeburners has grown to become well-known for its range of award-winning single malt whiskies, which are also available in port and sherry cask, American oak, peated and the ‘Director’s Cut’.

“This is a huge result for the Limeburners team,” Syme told drinks bulletin. “We [also] picked up three Gold medals, a Silver and two Bronze medals.”

Syme added, “To win this award for the second year in a row certainly says we must be doing something right.”

Shortly behind Limeburners was Kangaroo Island Spirits, which picked up Champion Gin, while Champion Vodka was awarded to Old Young’s, also in Western Australia.

Champion Brandy went to the renowned St Agnes Distillery in South Australia, while Champion Rum went to the Hoochery Distillery and Champion Liqueur to Castle Glen Australia in Queensland.
