Merivale Group Founder Dies

John Hemmes, Founder of Merivale Group, passed away last night, Sunday 2 March; losing his battle to cancer.

Mr. Hemmes is recognised as one of the most successful pioneers within the hospitality industry. Since its foundation over 59 years ago, Mr. Hemmes and his family transformed the business from a fashion label in their Burwood home to a major hospitality group, owning a growing portfolio of more than 50 restaurants, bars, pubs, hotels and function spaces in Sydney.

The Hemmes family released a statement earlier today, which read: “The Hemmes family announce with great sadness that John Hemmes passed away last night, following a long battle with multiple myeloma.

“He died peacefully at his Sydney home, The Hermitage, surrounded by his family. The family have asked that their privacy be respected at this very difficult time.”
