WA Takes the Title from NSW at Craft Beer Awards

Western Australia won the top awards at this year’s Craft Beer Awards, taking the title of Champion Craft Beer from 2014 NSW winner, Modus Operandi Brewing Company.

It was the family-owned microbrewery, Feral Brewing Co. that won this year’s Champion Craft Beer award, as well as Champion Wheat Beer with its sour beer, Watermelon Warhead.

The winning brew is a light sour German wheat beer that has been infused with half a tonne of watermelons. Craft Beer Industry Association Executive Officer, Chris McNamara said the win of a sour beer represents the rise in interest in the style, which he hopes will continue to rise.

Also from WA, the Monk Craft Brewery Kitchen in Fremantle received Champion Small Brewery, while Australia’s first female owned and run brewery, Two Birds Brewing Co. won Champion Large Brewery and Modus Operandi picked up Champion Medium Brewery for the second year in a row.

“There were 91 breweries that entered this year’s awards with over 380 different brews,” David Cryer of Cryermalt, the presenting partner of Craft Beer Awards said. “There is a wealth of top talent right here in our backyard and it is an exciting time to be supporting such a booming industry.”
