Industry Establishes ‘Diversity at drinks’ Council

This week, leading members of the Australian alcohol industry established a new and groundbreaking ‘Diversity at drinks’ Council that will work towards creating a more positive and diverse industry that promotes equal opportunities for all.

A first for the alcohol industry and an initiative led by the drinks association (publisher of drinks bulletin), the purpose of the Diversity at drinks council is to create a culturally progressive and socially reflective industry that represents, supports and celebrates diversity at all levels.

The Council will be led by Chair Denis Brown, from Bacardi-Martini Australia; Co-Chair Lucy Nandi, from Lion - Beer, Spirits & Wine Australia; and Co-Chair Ashley Powell, from Moët-Hennessy Australia, with the support of 22 volunteers from member companies of the association (pictured above).

Denis Brown said that the Council will be working to make the drinks industry an even more attractive and inclusive industry to work in.

“I believe that the right small behaviours at the top of organisations can make a difference over time. My aim is to work as an association to develop and share a playbook that helps all members companies and leaders convert their commitment into a truly inclusive work environment.”

As a father to both sons and daughters, Denis sees the importance of creating an industry inclusive of both genders for now and future generations to come.

“The research is compelling that diversity delivers better business performance, and diversity makes for a more inclusive and attractive workplace,” Denis explained.

“A recent McKinsey report shows that we have more to do: ‘even when top executives say the right things, employees don’t think they have a plan for making progress toward gender equality, don’t see those words backed up with action, don’t feel confident calling out gender bias when they see it and don’t think frontline managers have gotten the message. Only 45 per cent of employees, for example, think their companies are doing what it takes to improve diversity outcomes.”

Denis added, “We have a great industry and we want it to be stronger and more attractive for all employees (young and old, male and female) and there are fresh actionable ideas that we need to embrace to keep pace with the changing world.”

Lucy Nandi said, “I believe that we are all responsible for driving a positive change in our industry to ensure it supports all of its people, now and in the future. I’m excited to be a part of the Diversity Council that will play an important role in keeping diversity top of mind in our sector through connecting our leaders to the opportunities to drive best practice in this space.”

Ashley Powell shared a similar sentiment: “Encouraging diversity provides everyone with broader perspectives leading to awareness, adaptability and innovation. It also allows us to develop and retain the best talent for the ongoing success of the industry. With this in mind I am excited to be appointed as a representative of the drinks association to support the mission of the Diversity at drinks Council.”
